As previously mentioned, the MaxAttack! event will be scored on the first six stages at Olympus due to the unfortunate loss of one of our rally friends.

Here are the updates from the teams from the last service last night, and how the teams ended up for the first round of the 2011 MaxAttack! Series.

-Tom and Don Burress said their #437 Volkswagen GTI was doing well and that the oiling issue was under control. They drove hard and took 10 seconds out of Wyatt Knox and Ole Holter's #333 Mazda Mazdaspeed3 on the first run of Brooklyn. It wasn't quite enough though, as they had a bit more to make up, so the team would wind up 2nd in MaxAttack!, just 10 seconds back. A very good effort by a local grassroots team!

-For their part, Wyatt Knox and Ole Holter drove a fast, consistent rally from start to end in their #333 Mazda Mazdaspeed3. The car was robust and the team was very quick. They will take home 1st place points for Olympus MaxAttack! for their efforts. Congratulations, Wyatt and Ole!

-Dave Henderson and Terrence McDowell really picked up the pace over the last four stages! They brought the #711 Mazda Mazda3 from 6th to 3rd in 27 stage miles! Excellent effort for the pair. The car held up great. Just a minor exhaust leak, but no major issues.

-ACP and Robbie Durant reported no real problems, but the crew was working under the hood of the #20 Scion xD when our reporter stopped by. As others picked up the pace, ACP and Robbie fell off just a bit, finishing 6th, missing the final MaxMoney position by a mere 2 seconds! Andrew just wanted to say that he was "really having fun running in a 2WD car again." I think the team has signed up to run the regional event on Sunday, perhaps using the stage time to get the car sorted a bit more before it's next outing. But all in all, it was a good result for a new, untested rally car!

-Brian Gottlieb and Patrick Darrow were cool as a cucumber at service, saying they had no issues and no drama, but the pair must have been pushing the #466 Honda Civic pretty hard, as they kept their 4th place position as others were moving around them. At the finish, they were just 11 seconds adrift of Henderson/McDowell.

-Adam Crane and Britta Nielsen was another team with little drama. The only quote we could get from him was "MORE POWER!" The also held their position to bring the #742 Toyota Corolla home in 5th, the final MaxMoney spot. They were just 14.5 seconds behind Gottlieb/Darrow at the final time control.

-Just 10 seconds adrift of ACP, Dave and Rick Hintz brought back the #207 BMW M3 in 7th position on it's maiden voyage. The team had planned on swapping the slipping clutch for Sunday, but managed to nurse it to the effective end of the MaxAttack! event. The car was finished mere hours before the start of the rally, so it was a very good result for an untested ride. We look forward to seeing Dave and Rick compete again in their new MaxAttack! machine!

-Kris and K. Edward Dahl were surffering from an intermittent engine problem that broght the #258 Honda Civic down to 3 cylinders from time to time. After driving at stage speed, the car seemed to fix itself, but they were a bit wary. Another grassroots team, the pair have no service crew. Someone drove their truck to the service area for them so they could work on the car themselves. They brought the Honda home in 8th place, 30 seconds behind the Hintz brothers.

-Sean Medcroft and Jenne Medcroft dropped from 8th to 16th when the 6 axle bolts that hold one side of the rear axle to the diff flange on their #141 Merkur XR4Ti sheared off at the starting line of one stage. The pair had no choice but to work on the car in the control, which added more penalty to the time it took to actually improvise an impromptu repair. Tough break for the team.

-No issues reported from Garth Ankeny and Russ Kraushaar in the crowd favorite #96 Saab 96, but they certainly had their own battle going, as they finished just 1 single second behind the Dahl's!

-Kristen Tabor reported that they had a "big moment" on the loose gravel of Smith Creek that scared mom/codriver Janice. She said they pushed very hard on Brooklyn to try to beat brother Mark in his 4WD car. The daughter/mother team brought the #231 Acura RSX-S home in 10th.

-Those Tabors like to stick together, and father, Bruce Tabor, with codriver Tim Maple brought their #222 Nissan Sentra SE-R home right behind his daughter in 11th with no real issues after fixing their broken strut from earlier.

-Dave and Jenatte Clark report that their #509 Toyota Celica was suffering from overheating, but they found if they removed the lamp pod to get more air to the radiator, it would stay cool enough to continue. They brought the car home in 12th position at the end of the day.

-Brian McGuire and Jennifer Kraus had an exhaust system come loose on their #419 BMW 325i but the crew got it handled at service.

-The rookie team of Dustin Embrey and Jeffrey Stoner brought their #206 Toyota Corolla into the final service with a transmission so noisy it was painful to listen to. They can say they finished their very first rally, though, which is an accomplishment!

So, for the Western Round of the 2011 MaxAttack! Series at Olympus Rally, here are your MaxMoney winners:

Olympus MaxAttack! Concludes Early

There was a sad incident at Olympus Rally yesterday involving a national all-wheel drive team. Rally America and Rally Sports Group of America officials have decided to conclude the Olympus national rally and the MaxAttack! competition as of Saturday's specialtage 6.

-A little more information on the #190 Jason Staats/Billy Irvin crash. The team carried too much speed into an R5 into L3, and it sent theNissan Sentra SE-R Spec V into the forest. We're glad they're okay.

-The Hintz Brothers, who are currently currently fighting just a few seconds down for the last MaxMoney position, are reportedly suffering from a slipping clutch in the #207 BMW M3. Let's hope they are able to nurse it through until they get to a long enough service stop to get it swapped.

MAXATTACK! SCORES AFTER 2 STAGES:

-After the early day stages, the #333 Mazda Mazdaspeed3 of Wyatt Knox and Ole Holter are in the 1st ($1,500.00) position with very consistent stage scores...a 5:41.9 on SS1 and a 5:41.3 on SS2 (same stage)!

-Despite belching a little more oil from the breather than the Demon boys are comfortable with, Tom and Don Burress have only given up 22 seconds to Wyatt in their #437 Volkswagen GTI, which for now puts them in the 2nd ($1,200.00) position.

-Just 11 seconds back from the Demon Brothers, ACP and Robbie Durant are pedaling the #18 Scion xD in 3rd (1,000.00) position.

-As has been seen so many times before in nearly every MaxAttack! rally to date, the 4th ($800.00) and 5th ($500.00) MaxMoney positionsare totally up for grabs! Right now, we have a 4-way battle for 4th/5th between #466 Brian Gottlieb/Patrick Darrow (Honda Civic), #742 Adam Crane/Britta Nielsen (Toyota Corolla), #711 Dave Henderson/Terrence McDowell (Mazda Mazda3), #207 Dave Hintz/Richard Hintz (BMW M3), with just 4 seconds covering Gottlieb, Crane, and Henderson, while Hintz is a another 9 seconds back from them.

-And the pack doesn't have any comfort room, either! Right behind them, a scant 5 seconds cover #141 Sean Medcroft/Jenne Medcroft (Merkur XR4Ti), #96 Garth Ankeny/Russ Kraushaar (Saab 96), and #258 Kris Dahl/K. Edward Dahl (Honda Civic) too!

As usual, MaxAttack! brings out the competitive drive in our great 2WD teams!

Olympus MaxAttack! Event Update 4

-#214 Phil Meyers/Tracy Manspeaker are gambling a bit. The shift linkage on theirVolkswagen GTI broke, and the team had to stop and fix it on a hot stage. They figure they lost about 6 minutes, but, trying not to lose anymore time, they left their sump guard on the stage. The service crew has the shift linkage in good order now, but with no skid plate over the Washington rocks, they they are definitely rolling the rally dice!

-After the second service, the teams do a leg of 4 stages that do a big "out and back." The teams are on these stages right now.

-SS3- Smith Creek East (6.6 miles)
-SS4- Brooklyn East (7.0 m)
-SS5- Brooklyn West (7.0 m)
-SS6- Smith Creek West (6.6 m)

The Brooklyn stage is a classic in PNW rallying. A mainline road with relatively smooth gravel and very good camber characteristics, it encourages a team with the confidence to push. The corners are almost banked, and will reward a driver with the will to attack them. It's a favorite of local rallyists and visitors alike.

Olympus MaxAttack! Event Update 3

Lots of early rally carnage to report, as the teams are clearly pushing the limits of their skills and equipment chasing after the $5,000.00 purse:

-#190 Jason Staats/Billy Irvin (Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V) is out with a broken control arm/crash. Both guys are okay physically.

-#600 Dillon Van Way/Jake Blattner broke a driveshaft on the turbocharged Ford Fiesta. They are using the Sadev sequential gearbox from the R2 package, so the car uses special driveshafts. According to the report, they did not bring a spare, so they are finished for the weekend. Dillon: "It was fun while it lasted."

-#20 Andrew Comrie-Picard/Robbie Durant reports having some ECU glitches causing driveability issues in the Scion xD. He figures he lost 10-15 seconds on SS1, but says "the Palix stage was gnarly fun!"

-#118 Nick Allen/John Dillon lost a radiator hose connection which bled out all the Ford Focus's coolant with expected results. They are done for the weekend.

-#437 Tom Burress/Don Burress report that they are "lacking confidence" in the engine of their Volkswagen GTI. They're chasing a misfire and there is a fair amount of visible oil coming out of the breather.

-#222 Bruce Tabor/Tim Maple came into the second service of the day with a clattering broken strut mount on their Nissan Sentra SE-R. The team was able to successfully change it out at service and they're continuing to SS3.

-Two teams suffered intercom loss on SS1, but both got them going again at the first service. The teams with advanced sign language skills are#231 Kristen Tabor/Janice Tabor (Acura RSX-S) and #258 Kris Dahl/K. Edward Dahl (Honda Civic).

-#141 Sean Medcroft/Jenne Medcroft had a wild ride on SS2, when they spun their Merkur XR4Ti at speed. Sean figures they lost about 10 seconds in the ordeal, but they're doing fine.

-Competing in their very first rally EVER, #206 Dustin Embrey/Jeffrey Stoner (Toyota Corolla) made a couple rookie mistakes, but are happy to be learning the ropes quickly. The team checked in early to a timing control which will net them some road points (penalty time) at the end of the day, and they had an agricultural excursion on SS2. They're getting themselves sorted and look forward to SS3.

Olympus MaxAttack! Event Update 2

-We've just heard that Blake Lind and Joel Pacello's Toyota Corolla was the first MaxAttack! casualty of 2011. They are up against the "Maximum Permitted Lateness" (MPL) limit and are now just trying to get straight to service. They'll run tomorrow's regional rally after some repairs, but missing a stage takes them out of MaxAttack! contention for the weekend. Best of luck getting it repaired guys, and enjoy your day tomorrow!

-John Dillon is a very familiar face to the US rally community, having codriven for some of the most accomplished drivers in the country throughout his career. This weekend he's sitting to the right of a relative newcomer in Nick Allen's #118 Ford Focus. Nick started rallying just last year and has taken to learning the craft of stage driving seriously, and with a veteran navvie calling the notes, is sure to advance throughout the weekend if they keep it tidy.

Olympus MaxAttack! Event Update

-The cars left Parc Expose starting at 9am, and do Palix 1 stage for their first test. The stage is 5.6 miles long, and they have a service immediately after. We'll be looking for reports from that service to get some early impressions. The same stage is re-run (Palix 2) right after the 30 minute service.

-Tough start for the #86 Toyota Corolla of Blake Lind and Joel Pacello. The car's alternator failed on the way to the first stage. They are at O'Reilly Auto Parts trying to locate a replacement. Not looking good. Since Adam Crane runs the same car and has a spare, they are now trying to purchase a charged deep cycle battery to get them through SS1 and to service where they can hopefully get the spare from Adam.
